Detailed Narrative Description of Project:
Environmental pollution is a major problem in the big cities of developing country all over the world. All major cities of Bangladesh are facing environmental problems due to lack of environmental management. Khulna, the third largest metropolitan city of Bangladesh, has a total population of 1.5 million with a growth rate of 5% per annum. The major environmental problems of Khulna city are traffic induced air pollution, solid waste management and crisis for fresh drinking water. This study will attempt to assess the present status of environmental pollution and its management in Khulna city. Air is one of the five essentials (air, water, food, heat and light) for the human beings. It is more important than water – without water a person can survive for days, but without air no more than a couple of minutes. More than one-and-a-half billion people in the world live in urban areas with dangerous levels of air pollution. Some of the highest air pollution levels are in the urban centers of the developing countries. Motor vehicles are most important facilities for transportation. This transport facility is not only providing movement of goods and human all over the city but also the source of air pollution. The most concerning pollutants produced from transportation facility are NOx and SOx. This study assesses the state of vehicular air pollution and its impacts on human health in Khulna city. It has been found that three types of vehicle are the major contributors to NOx emission in Khulna city. These major categories of vehicles are 2-stroke engine vehicles, Cars and Taxis and Diesel truck. On the other hand diesel truck is the main contributor of vehicular SOx emission because of high fuel consumption rate. Due to the increase of population rate, other vehicles contribution differs from year to year. The main factor for production of SOx from vehicles is high content of sulfur in fuel, reconditioned aged vehicles etc. The ambient concentration of SOx and NOx in Khulna city is not so high as in Dhaka because the number of high-rise building and Meteorological condition in Khulna are different from those of Dhaka. But now a day the rejected two-stock engine vehicles from Dhaka are multiplying the existing two-stock engine vehicles in Khulna.
