|Detailed Narrative Description of Project:
The water and sanitation systems of slum dwellers of Dhaka city and industrial areas were studied through questionnaire survey, physical visit and focus group discussion. The survey findings indicate that the water and sanitation system in the slums are not good and it also differs in system of management. Three slums and several industrial areas were studied. The slums that were covered were Dhamalkot, Mohammadi Housing and Beribandh area of Dhaka city.
It is note that the condition of sanitation and water and other socio-economic condition is better in the slums where intervention was made by NGOs while the condition is a bit worse in the slums where no such intervention were made. There also exist differentials in slums situated in the public and private land. The condition of slums in the public land are in slightly better condition than those in the private land. The slums that are in private owned land suffer from many problems such as unhygienic drainage system, katcha latrine and payment for water supply. Such problems in public owned land, though, exist seem a bit lower. The main occupation of these slum dwellers are mainly rickshaw pulling, wage labors, garment workers maid servants, small business etc. The literacy rate of these slums are also very low, however, literacy rate of the females are a bit better than their male counterpart. The health issues of these slums are looked at by the Dhaka Urban Primary Health Care Project while the education for children are addressed by the NGOs like BRAC, ASA and other local NGOs. The water and sanitation condition of the densely populated industrial areas are also frustrating and need to be addressed. The sanitation systems are inadequate in the industrial belt of the Dhaka city.
